I know there's a shortage of breeders but there are quite a few ppl out there who want to "get rid off" their cavies. Just check out the "pets for sale" column on most pet forums.

I think that in the case of guinea pigs, it's hard to adopt from anywhere. Personally, I wld never adopt anything from them, be it guinea pig or dog or cat. I wld rather approach other organisations that specialise in the particular animal. These pp are much more dedicated than SPCA from what I see. Eg. if I wan to get a dog, I'd approach ASD. For guinea pigs, we dun have this choice cos there is no guinea pig rescue where we can go to, to adopt a guinea pig.
Scouring the ads is of course, a good alternative, but what I see is that there are many pp who prefer to sell rather than give up the pigs for adoption. And since the buyer still has to pay for the pig in the end, he may as well go to a pet shop to buy a pig, if he's looking for a particular breed or color. Therein lies the problem. Unless the buyer is not particular, where it's a any breed or color also can kind of case, then he may as well buy from the person who no longer wants the pig. Like that lor.

actually, it's true...it's difficult to get gps here in spore. even de gps brought imported in r not really variety to choose fr.
but i dun think we shud encourage backyard breeding either. i dunno....it seems dat abandonement/abuse probs will never end when de cycle doesn't stop.

Creating awareness amongst new buyers that there are ppl out there wanting to give away/sell their cavies is one thing. But changing ppl's attitude is another. Some think that the cavy is sick or "got problem" which is why its being given away. Others don't want these "pariah" cavies 'cos they want high class pedigree cavies from Germany or what not.
Others are choosy & want special breeds like Peruvian or Coronet or even rarer breeds like Satin, Alpaca, Argenti, Brindle, Harlequin, Magpie, Merino, Roan, Texel, Lilac, etc.
Telling new buyers that there are other sources besides pet shops is easy. The tough part is to change their mindset about so called "2nd hand" cavies.
Personally, I don't give 2 hoots if my cavy is a Satin on a mongrel. As long as its healthy & it wheeks at me, that's good enough. Which is why I don't mind adopting a dog from ASD even if its a so called mongrel. I don't need a CKCS or a corgie. As long as its healthy, obedient & expresses happiness in seeing me, that's fine with me.

I suppose it depends on the breeder's reason for breeding. In Melissa's case I think its more of letting nature take its course. If they mate, they mate. If they get pregnant, they get pregnant. But it certainly isn't for money 'cos firstly the $20 she charges is pittance. Secondly, if she thinks you're irresponsible, immature or rash, she wouldn't sell to you. But if the breeder is doing so for money, then it might be bad 'cos there will be a time when his supply exceeds demand & we might see abandoned cavies. BTW pet shops get their non imported cavies from commercial breeders. So these breeders may not be all that great. Which is why in my website I stressed on adopting from RESPONSIBLE breeders. But you are right about the cycle. Like I said, ppl buy from pet shops. Pet shops buy from breeders. Cavies are being stressed out from the demand to mate & give birth. Pet shop cavies are not treated properly. The cycle just goes on & on. And the only way to break it is to stop buying from pet shops. Once the demand stops, they will not bother buying from breeders. And in turn, breeders will stop the mass breeding. So long as there are ppl who buy from petshops (for whatever wonderful reasons they can give!), this cycle will go on. For me, I don't want to have blood on my hands so I'd rather not get a pet than buy from a pet shop!

I guess one reason why most ppl choose to buy frm pet shop is also the ignorance of able to buy cavies or any animals from breeders. I used to buy my pets from pet shops too And both my piggies are bought frm the shop too. Too bad i got to know of the forum so late if not i would try to adopt frm here already. But now i am trying to adopt hammies frm ppl who lost their interest in it. (But got space constraints) Maybe we should try to find a way of making ppl know of forums before they even walk into the shop to get the pets.

Not all are due to ignorance cos there aren'nt many guinea pig breeders in spore. So if u are looking for a particular breed might have problems getting it from a breeder thus many got them from petshops...& if u wana get from breeder gotta prepare to wait cos they dun have babies often.
