Guys, I recall last time some ppl posted saying when they were clearing their cage, they found their BC got stuck together with some whitish stuff. I think I know what you all mean now. I never got this before & today is the first time I saw it, at certain parts of the cage, the bottom layer of the bedding became a bit hard & I had to pry it out with my fingers. It was like the BC had fused together into blocks. Part of it had gone mouldy. Here are some pics I took: upload.image4free.com/Img_0068.jpgupload.image4free.com/Img_0069.jpgI've written in to BC's manufacturer so let's wait & see what they say could be the cause.

looks like your breeder's choice is being clumped together by the mould .. my cavies' poo will clump together like that but this is the first time i've seen breeder's choice do that .. maybe its the hot hot weather tat causes this ... wheak .. do tell us breeder's choice reply hor ..

Its not the mould 'cos mould is dry & doesn't have the ability to cause pellets to stick together. BTW there are 2 ppl here with similar nicks. I'm wheekwheek (formerly called wheek before I lost the darn password). Wheak is another person.

mmm, actually when bc gets very wet, it expands a little and will break up a little. so it can get kind of dusty after it dries up after that. . I think when these dusty particles get wet again with their pee, they then clump together again into one big piece like that.. dunno if it makes sense, but that's what I think happens..

Ok, the local distributor has replied & according to him, this clumping could be 'cos the cavies walk all over the pellets before the pellets have a chance to dry & therefore they are "mushed" together & after a few days, it ends up like that.
I can't remember who was the one who last time said she had "mushrooms" growing in her BC, but anyway, this is what they had to say about it:
As regards the experience of "mushrooms" growing out of the litter, we have witnessed this happening before, but only when the litter are not change over an extended period of time and become an ideal ground for fungi to grow. As BC is treated at high temperature during production, it is unlikely to be a source. These fungi spores are mainly from the air or the food. Likewise, if other organic material are treated in the same manner (kept moist, with waste as fertilizer) , fungi will also grow on them, eg, wood chip, wood pellets, shredded newspaper, etc). The litter should be changed way before this can happen.

zhuzhu, think the bedding gets wetter cos the pigs are drinking more water due to the warm weather, thus more pee? Do you notice them drinking a lot more water than usual?

my bc clumps together if i don't change it frequently enough. its like at the bottom there's a whole thick layer that's all clumped together, and on top loose dry bc. a gross mix of broken down bc, poo, and pee after my pigs step all over. it doesn't happen with the marchioro cage with the tray.
