From Streats: SIZED GUINEEA PIG BRED FOR FOOD
PERUVIAN researchers have successfully bred fleshier guinea pigs which they plan to market worldwide as another source of meat.
The "super guinea pig" tips the scales at around 1.1kg each, which is 420g heavier than a normal-sized one.
Although guinea pigs, from the rodent family, are adored as cuddly pets by millions worldwide, they are a popular meat source in Peru, South America, where they originated.
It is estimated that Peruvians consume about 65 million guinea pigs each year.
Said to taste as good as rabbit meat, guinea pig meat is high in protein and low in cholesterol and fat, Lianhe Zaobao reported yesterday.
Researchers at Peru's La Molina National University took 34 years to breed the super guinea pig.
Said Ms Gloria Palacios, director of the project: "Foreigners are more reluctant to eat it as they see the animal as a pet. I think if they become familiar with the meat, maybe they will be tempted to try it."
Since the beginning of this year, these guinea pigs have been exported to the US, Japan and several European countries that have large Peruvian communities.
