Climate here is different. Very humid. Moisture takes much longer to evaporate. That's why over in the US, ppl say just lay newspapers & cover with hay/straw. The paper absorbs the pee & the hay/straw keeps the cavy from the wet papers.
But that doesn't work here. Takes forever for the wet newspaper to dry & the hay/straw also gets wet & doesn't dry fast enuf so the cavy gets dirty & wet with own pee.
Similarly, over there any bedding be it CareFresh or shavings will dry faster. Not here.

Recycle BC lor. Dat's what I've been doing all along. My cage is 100 x 50 cm & I use 3 to 4 cm thick layer of BC. But a 13.3 kg bag can last me 1.5 months 'cos I recycle. As long as its done properly, it should be quite hygenic.

Sigh! Explain so many times liao. Maybe ask Rusty to make it a sticky! ;D First u remove all the poop. Then u remove the wet BC. Replace wet BC with dry BC. Lay wet BC out to dry. If got sun better still if not air dry also can. For at least 48 hours. After that dump in a box & mix with fresh BC. Keep repeating this everytime u change their bedding. Sooner or later u will have a big box of what should be a mix of 50% fresh & 50% recycled BC. After 1.5 months I will wash their cage. After that I throw out ALL BC & open a new bag & the cage gets fresh BC. When I change the bedding a few days later, I repeat what I did before. Pick up poop, recycle, etc.

For me, I change their entire bedding once every two weeks. But still very wasted to me. Cos some of the fresh bedding never kena being pee or poo before. Wheekwheek, if dun recycle bc, can just throw away all the wet bedding den for those clean one, never kena poo and pee one, I put them in a box. Den after cleaning the cage, mix them with fresh bc? Can or not? Cos rusty and sugar both like to pee and poo at the corners. The middle part of bc never kena anything at all.

Just leave it alone & top up with more BC lor. Its only for the wet ones that I dry & reuse.

I line the base with newspaper before topping up with bc. So when I clean the cage, have to put the clean bedding in a box den wrap up the whole bedding and throw away lor. Den like that, the clean bedding can be used again and again until it become dirty.
