This happened to me just last week. I ordered some hay from MyPetsCompany. They delivered to me and I wanted to start feeding it to Bubbles right away as she had given birth and needed it. Previously Aquapets was alwiz out of stock, so I ordered it online instead.
I opened it, pulled out a handful and was just about to drop it in the hay rack when I took a closer look at the brown stuff I was holding. Then I dropped the bag and the hay, and screamed. There was a piece of dried up and flattened insect in my hand. It looked like either a large c0ckroach or most probably, it's a locust. I came to this conclusion later, after screaming for a while.
Then I asked my mum to help me. She poured all the alfalfa out on a newspaper and sorted through it for me. She picked up wings, legs, here and there, a head and a back part of the body. There seemed to be more than one insect from all the pieces she gathered. They were all dried and flattened pieces of insects. Then she repacked for me into another plastic bag.
I think it's a locust, cos there were black stripes on the long back legs and wings. My skin was crawling I tell you. I took pics of the insects, will post it up later. I called MyPetsCompany abt it. They told me to write a complaint to the distributor and also to Oxbow. I'm gonna do so this week.
From the state of the insects, I actually strongly believe that this happened during the packing process. Where they dry, flatten and pack the hay into bales for the plastic bags. So I think the fault lies with Oxbow and not the distributor or the shop, cos they dun pack the hay at all. It's just a reselling process where they never open the bag at all. What do you all think? This creeps me out. I have been a strong supporter of Oxbow for very long, and still am. But this incident has given me alot to think about.
