I brought my guinea pigs to Dr ling in her cage. The bedding I used in the cage was wood shavings (th kind they use for hamsters). So after reading what most members said abt wood shavings, i asked her abt it. She told me to continue using it. She only told me to sieve it before using it to get rid of smaller particles. She said even cat litter has its pros & cons. That's what she told me.

FYI, I asked Dr ling of Namly clinic & she said wood shavings are better than cat litter. The only advise she gave me is to sieve the wood shavings to get rid of the small particles which i do everytime I clean their cages. Correct. But did you tell Dr Ling that we are talking about Breeder's Choice Cat Litter which is made from compressed recycled newspapers? Or did you simply say "cat litter"? Don't forget, traditional cat litter is clay based or silica based, both of which are harmful to small animals. If you just ask any vet "wood shavings or cat litter", for sure they will say shavings. But if you give the vet more details, its a different story. FYI, I go to Dr Ling too & when one of my cavies had skin problem, she asked what bedding I used. I told her Breeder's Choice Cat Litter BUT I went into further details saying its compressed recycled newspaper. She said that it was ok. Another thing, wood shavings can be softwood or hardwood. Hardwood is safe but NOT softwood. Softwood is the most common so I'm guessing your's is softwood e.g. pine or cedar. The only con of Breeder's Choice is that's its costly. If you go check with Dr Ling again & this time specify that its compressed recycled newspaper, I'm sure you will get a totally different reply. I mean, even some US pet shops recognise & admit that softwood shavings give off phenols. I don't need to go into details about this 'cos its all over my website. Heck, even Kaytee says on their website that softwood shavings contain aromatic oils i.e. phenols i.e. the stuff that is toxic to small animals. When asking a vet, its essential to give all the info & details. Don't forget there are hundreds of brands & you can't expect a vet to know every brand & what the product is. So next time, tell her the cat litter you are refering to is made from compressed recycled newspaper. If not she will probably assume you mean the traditional clumping cat litter made from clay or silica. Besides BC, other brands of compressed recycled newspaper include Good Mews (which incidentally is also labelled as cat litter) & Pets Preference Original Texture.

wheekwheek shld know cos i think he goes to Dr Ling.. he's very against wood shavings... I'm very against softwood shavings 'cos its toxic to small animals. I'm not against hardwood shavings (aspen) 'cos its not harmful, however I wouldn't recommand it 'cos I've used it before (both aspen as well as shredded aspen) & its useless at absorbing pee & controlling odours.
