Perhaps that's true.. but they probably also leave the good hay for the US market cos they know that people in the US have got lots of hay to choose from..on the other hand, they know that we folks in singapore are limited to a few brands and they probably think they're the leading brand over here...and that's why they think they can get away with it..ah well..we'll just have to source for new hay... i only had one good bag of oxbow before.. my first bag bought from pet mart..after that..it was all just crap.. but i saw people in the US complaining of Oxbow's hay quality as well..twas on some message board..hmm

Do a feature on pet products or something... and now's a good time to do it... due to that Pedigree Dry Dog Food thing..wanna do something, make it BIG... posting a warning on this forum isn't much use..not enough people read it..

I'm just saying the hay head I found in my supposed orchard grass hay is the head from timothy hay. Orchard grass hay head don't look like that. This is why I suspect Oxbow is passing timothy hay off as orchard grass hay.

Oic, I thought we are not suppose to find any hay head in timothy. I know orchard grass has no stem at all.

Oic, I thought we are not suppose to find any hay head in timothy. I know orchard grass has no stem at all. Timothy sometimes has hay heads. Those are edible. They are long & furry & if you visit ponds, you will notice it resembles those cattails growing near ponds. Orchard grass hay heads however are different. More like little stumps of furry bits & there are like several stumps linked to each other by a fine stalk.

if we reli want to issue a warning, we muz have enuf proof 1st if not the company can sue us for defame and tarnishing their company reputation I have an email from Oxbow. There was once I bought this brand of timothy hay called Bunny. It didn't look like timothy so I emailed Oxbow to check. I was in contact with this lady there. I even sent her a pic of the hay & hay head. She replied that it was probably a mixture of hay including grass hay but definitely not timothy. And I have seen orchard grass hay heads. Its not like this. What I saw were classic timothy hay heads. Plus, the orchard grass hay I held in the past had thicker blades. This batch the leaves are so thin.

The field of botany itself is specialized.. not any botanist will be able to tell you... I've never used orchard grass before.. but it seems not only Derrick but emmababy has noticed the difference as well..hmm..it's disturbing, really.. a well known company such as oxbow should not behave in this manner... Derrick, maybe you can try complaining to oxbow about your suspicions? Though they'll probably deny it...

Derrick, maybe you can try complaining to oxbow about your suspicions? Though they'll probably deny it... As you said, they'd probably deny it. Below is a pic of a hay head which Oxbow identified as "a grass hay but certainly not timothy". Below is a pic of Oxbow timothy hay. Look at the middle of the pic at the right side. See that long furry thing? That's the hay head. This is the classic timothy hay head which I found in a bag of supposed orchard grass hay. The smell is different too. This one I can't describe. Those of you who have used both timothy & orchard grass before will know the difference. Also, in the past orchard grass used to cost more than timothy. But now same price. How wierd. Is it 'cos value of orchard grass dropped? Or is it 'cos timothy kena passed off as orchard grass? Whatever it is lah. I can tell you the smell is different, the hay head looks different & the hay itself looks different. As far as I am concerned, these 3 things are more than enuf to convince me that knowingly or otherwise, Oxbow has packaged the recent batch of timothy as orchard grass hay.
